Denton trustees table water and sewer rate increases as board reviews $389,150 playground bid

The Village of Denton Board of Trustees on Feb. 2, 2026 voted to delay action on proposed water and sewer rate ordinances until its March 2 meeting, while reviewing a $389,150 playground structures bid and related matting costs.
Trustee Amanda Fangmeier moved to table Ordinance 26-1-1 (water) and Ordinance 26-1-2 (sewer) pending further review; Trustee Trent Wheatley seconded the motion, which carried. The board did not adopt new rates at the meeting and will revisit the rate-study and ordinances on March 2, 2026.
The meeting also featured a significant parks proposal: Trustee Fangmeier presented a playground rendering and vendor estimate listing $389,150 for structures and $132,120 for safety matting, a combined total of $521,270. Mary Sue Wagner offered to assist with grant writing to help pay for the project.
The treasurer reported current account balances and Keno revenues that bear on the village budget. Village accounts included General $32,939.39 and Water $37,504.44; the Keno report for December 2025 showed gross proceeds of $445,240.49 and the village share of $29,052.92.
On winter maintenance and safety, maintenance worker Ross Blackledge reported radium-plant repairs are complete and said he has submitted a locate request to repair a bent speed-limit sign on W. Denton. Residents had raised a street dip on Cass Avenue and a tree at Cass and W. Denton that obstructs sightlines; Chair Joe Hobelman said that, moving forward, the village will clear village sidewalks, the village parking lot and the downtown business district and will maintain a consistent plowing policy.
Trustees approved a one‑year extension of the Keno contract amendment and authorized Chair Hobelman to sign the contract. The motion, moved by Fangmeier and seconded by Ryan Osborn, carried. The transcript lists the contract period as running from Feb. 1, 2026 to Jan. 31, 2026.
Other approved items included acceptance of a camera-upgrade bid from NCS IT Support for $905.26, approval for maintenance worker Ross Blackledge to attend the Nebraska Rural Water Annual Conference March 9–11, 2026, and setting a $6,000 budget for a July 3 or 4 fireworks show and a request for Midwest Firework to perform the display.
The board approved routine claims and payroll and adjourned. The sewer and water ordinances and the rate-study will return to the agenda on March 2, 2026.
