Annapolis police outline summer safety plan, highlight focus on gun- and violent-crime reduction

Acting Chief Amy Migth told the Public Safety Committee that the Annapolis Police Department’s summer safety plan (May–August) prioritizes gun-violence reduction, a broader reduction in violent crime, lower property crime and increased community engagement.
Migth described intelligence-driven strategies: looking for wanted violent offenders, working with the FBI and ATF, and coordinating with the county real-time intelligence center. Tactics include foot and bicycle patrols in high-crime neighborhoods, targeted downtown presence when bars close, and traffic enforcement focused on corridors with serious crash histories (Forest Drive and West Street).
The department also emphasized community programs that shift in the summer to camps and outreach: fishing and crabbing camps, a planned teen enrichment camp, and visits to summer camps as a form of prevention and relationship-building. Crossing guards will be placed at Green and Randall streets downtown to manage pedestrian safety during peak summer crowds.
Migth reported staffing at 118 sworn officers out of an authorized 125 and said the department is actively hiring entry-level and lateral candidates; cadet positions and a pay increase for cadets are part of the recruitment strategy. Deputy Chief Brandford noted that analysts and historical data inform deployment choices and that commanders are charged with bringing tactics back to patrol personnel.
Committee members thanked the presenters and asked for copies of the summer plan and graduation dates for training cohorts; Migth and staff said those materials would be shared.
