Sheriff: swift capture after sword attack; county to boost enforcement and foot patrols

Sheriff Jeremy Breeze briefed the Board of Supervisors on June 2 about a violent sword attack and the county's response.
Breeze credited deputies, K-9 teams, drones and partner agencies for quickly locating and apprehending the suspect after the attack. The district attorney later said the suspect was charged with aggravated mayhem for an attack that severed three fingers.
"I'm very proud of them and professionalism," the sheriff said, praising the multiagency effort and noting that the department"put all hands on deck" to capture the individual.
Breeze told the board the department recorded nearly 100 calls for service at one apartment address this year, including disturbances, fights and ambulance requests, and said that pattern strained resources. "We're gonna do more foot patrols," he said, and that the sheriff's office will evaluate problem-oriented areas and consider targeted enforcement while attempting to route people to services.
The sheriff emphasized community cooperation, the use of after-action reviews and partnerships with probation, Cal Fire and other agencies. He also thanked the board for budgetary and operational support that he said had improved coordination and response.
Board members expressed appreciation for the rapid response and for the communications the county used to notify residents during the incident.
