Huntsville mayor touts fiscal gains, plans $400,000 CD to boost reserves

The mayor said the administration plans to place $400,000 into a certificate of deposit as part of a strategy to build over $1 million in reserves and to earmark $100,000 for fire training and facility improvements.
Dawson described a new internal process that will lengthen the timeline for spending requests and departmental "wish lists" to three months for greater scrutiny, and asked department heads to bring larger purchases forward for collective review. He said the changes are intended to curb a "use-it-or-lose-it" mindset and improve oversight of large-ticket items.
The mayor also reported operational items including airport land payoff, an incoming grant payment from the Arkansas Division of Aviation and an upcoming industrial park real-estate closing. He told the council he would press state legislators if grant draws are delayed and credited staff and department heads for recent hiring and service improvements.
Council did not take final action during the address; items discussed will proceed through usual committee and procurement channels.
