The City of Huntsville on Jan. 8 swore in several newly appointed and reappointed municipal officials during its regular council meeting. Mayor Dawson led oaths for Lesle Evans (councilor, Ward 2) and Janice Smith, who was appointed city clerk and reappointed to the Park Commission, among others.
The mayor asked for a motion to appoint both the councilor and clerk positions; the council voted in favor without recorded opposition. "I, Lesle Evans, do solemnly swear or affirm that I will support the Constitution of the United States...and I will discharge the duties of counselor of the City of Huntsville," Evans recited during the oath. Janice Smith took an oath to serve as city clerk and as a park commissioner.
Other officials sworn in included John Parks as a Park Commissioner, Matt Smith as Economic Development Commissioner, Brad Willis as Planning Commissioner, Batina Kogre as an Economic Development Commissioner and Bill Mason as Airport Commissioner. Each took the standard oath to support the U.S. and Arkansas constitutions and to "discharge the duties" of their respective offices.
Council also confirmed Scott Thomas for a procedural post (pro tem) on a voice vote. The meeting included a formal recognition of Joa Smith for 14 years of service as an elected official and former city clerk; the mayor presented a plaque and the chamber applauded.
The swearing-in and appointments conclude the council's formal action on several vacancies and reappointments; documentation and signatures will be processed by the city attorney and the finance office as part of the appointments' administrative records.
