On the school budget, the Board voted to "approve the FY27 School Budget in categories as an annual appropriation with controls in the amount of $21,621,405." The motion was moved by Chip Williams and seconded by James Long and carried.
Supervisors discussed school capital needs during the meeting: Chairman James Brann announced an updated cost for the Northumberland Elementary School playground of $325,708.84 and asked County Administrator E. Luttrell Tadlock whether funds identified were prior‑year reimbursements. Tadlock said the funds appear on the school revenue side and must be reclassified to a prior‑year revenue account before transferring to the CIP/VIP account; the Board asked for the necessary Treasurer paperwork and placed the funding decision on next week's agenda.
Superintendent Leslie and supervisors also discussed bus procurement: the division currently has one replacement bus available and would have no spare if that bus failed; supervisors were urged to move quickly if the Board intends to fund a purchase.
After convening to a closed meeting to discuss personnel and contract negotiations under Va. Code §2.2‑3711, the Board reconvened and authorized the County Administrator to enter into emergency contracts with Cherry Bekaert for financial advisory services related to school finance and with Cordia Recruiting and Staffing, LLC, a Cherry Bekaert subsidiary, for interim Director of Finance services; those contracts will be evaluated monthly on an as‑needed basis.
