Crawford discusses water/sewer operations, approves modest pay bump for certified operator

City water and sewer staff described recent plant maintenance, training plans and emergency procedures at the Feb. 11 Crawford City Council meeting. The council voted to recognize operator certification and approved some equipment work while tabling other electrical repairs pending further study.
Edward and Dennis (water/sewer staff) outlined what constitutes a water emergency (broken mains, frozen lines or no flow) and a non‑emergency (taste, odor, particles) and explained the city's response protocols. They said they are updating the emergency response plan and OM manuals and seeking training for staff.
Council approved a $0.47/hour raise for Edward Blacksheep following his attainment of Grade VI water operator certification. The council also approved Fire & Ice estimates for two well house heaters and approved Country Electric's quote to replace eight light fixtures and accessories in the water treatment plant. Council tabled hiring an electrician to troubleshoot/repair the anode and to install corrosion‑resistant wiring at the water plant until staff can research options further.
The council discussed, but took no action on, hiring a separate water/wastewater laborer; members noted some duties require licensed operators and agreed to use other city employees where possible while pursuing required training.
As part of infrastructure maintenance, council directed staff to begin hydrant flushing and to gather records and maps for a formal hydrant testing and maintenance schedule.
