Wise County Board approves boundary adjustment for Town of Pound over objections

The Wise County Board of Supervisors voted to approve a boundary adjustment requested by the Town of Pound at its May 14 meeting. The motion to approve, made by Randy Carter and seconded by Bob Adkins, carried after Chairman J. H. Rivers and Supervisor Steve Bates voted no.
Leaburn Kennedy presented the Town’s request, saying the adjustment would establish a new line between the Town and County to incorporate land at the former Pound High School site and the J. W. Adams Combined School site so the Town could collect tax revenue if economic development occurs on those parcels; Kennedy said the adjustment was unrelated to uncertainties about the town charter. Citizens who spoke in favor included Lynda Hubbard, Doris Mullins and Debbi Hale. Those who voiced opposition included Jesse Hutchinson, Linda McConnell Lester and Steve Boggs.
The Board’s action formalizes the boundary change after the advertised public hearing; supporters said the change would allow future development revenue to go to the town, while opponents raised concerns during the hearing.
