Mercedes recognizes three state champions with mayoral proclamation

Mayor Oscar Montoya read a proclamation recognizing Matthew Bettis, Isabella Parker and Lexi Pogue for their athletic achievements and records, noting feats such as a 775-pound squat and state titles in powerlifting and high jump. ‘‘We don’t mess around here in Mercedes,’’ Montoya said during the presentation as the mayor and commission applauded the athletes and invited families and coaches to join them for photos.
Isabella Parker thanked the crowd and supporters: "I just want to say thank you to everyone for supporting us three and all the other people with the academics. It is super amazing to come from Mercedes," she said.
The commission used the ceremonial moment to thank parents, coaches and volunteers, and to recognize the student-athletes as role models for younger residents.
