Mercedes commission approves ceremonial naming process to honor Dr. Hector P. Garcia

The Mercedes City Commission voted June 16 to proceed with a ceremonial naming of a section of Ohio Street in honor of Dr. Hector P. Garcia, a native son recognized in the meeting for his military service and civil-rights leadership.

A committee presentation summarized outreach and a public survey that the presenter said showed roughly 70% approval for some form of street recognition. The committee recommended a targeted, non-address-changing designation — for example, signage from the American Legion to the city library — rather than a full formal renaming that would require address or emergency-service changes.

During the discussion commissioners and family members weighed options, including locating the ceremonial signage near the library and whether to consider additional commemorations for veterans who died in service. A public commenter, Mr. Garza, urged the city to consider naming streets after veterans who died in combat rather than honoring a single living person, saying, "one person does not represent the Vietnam War." The commission acknowledged those concerns and discussed alternatives such as encouraging developers to name new streets for veterans as new neighborhoods are platted.
