Huntsville water director outlines loan options and recent main breaks; sewer-rate increase tabled

The Huntsville water department reported it had been asked by the state wastewater office to consider raising sewer rates to support a wastewater-plant loan but that staff met with other lenders and identified better terms, including an extended 30-year repayment option.
"I was requested to find alternative options and met with [lenders] and they were able to offer us better terms and an extended repayment — 30 years — and I'll be presenting that this week," the water director said.
He also told council members the system experienced four separate main breaks on a six-inch distribution line tied to pressure-regulator adjustments after bringing a new tank online. The director contrasted those local six-inch breaks with a larger 24-inch Regional Water main break occurring nearby, saying the region has multiple pressure and supply issues.
City staff said they will present loan terms and recommended next steps for council consideration at an upcoming meeting; no formal rate increase was adopted at Monday’s meeting.
