Rockford students honored for spring athletics, FFA, DECA and a state "World of 8 Billion" video award

The Rockford Area Schools board set aside time at its June 15 meeting to celebrate spring student achievements across athletics, FFA, DECA, robotics and other activities, and to recognize a student who won a statewide video contest.

Activities director Dan Pratt introduced student-athletes who reported conference, section and state finishes across track and field, softball, baseball, golf, lacrosse and trap shooting. Students and captains highlighted team accomplishments (conference championships, state qualifiers and personal records) and noted postseason invitations including national-level competition.

Teachers Kelly Miller and Beth Russell presented Vance Buddy Phillips, a Rockford Middle School student who won the Minnesota State Honor Award in the World of 8 Billion video contest. Vance described his one-minute entry, "Energy Tiles," and explained the concept: small kinetic tiles compress underfoot, conveying energy through springs and generators to capture otherwise wasted pedestrian kinetic energy. "This video project has helped me become a more confident student in my creativity and my hope for my future," Vance said.

The board and community applauded the students—s accomplishments and the district said it will continue to support cross-curricular projects that connect environmental topics, technology and career readiness.

The celebration included recognition of staff and volunteers who supported the teams and programs; no board action was required on the recognitions.
