Board adopts 2627 District Operational Plan; superintendent asks board to weigh AI and capital choices

The Rockford Area Schools board unanimously adopted the district—s FY2627 District Operational Plan (DOP) on June 15 after a presentation by the superintendent and administrative staff.

The DOP outlines strategic directions including student growth and achievement, instructional alignment (including new math curriculum for grades 5–8), MTSS interventions, a "profile of a graduate," and improved communications and marketing. The superintendent highlighted systemwide priorities in cybersecurity and technology succession planning, noting recent cyberattacks on other districts and naming IT leadership as a near-term succession issue.

The superintendent also raised the question of how artificial intelligence will affect district operations and asked the board to consider policy approaches. The plan identifies stewardship of resources, long-term facility maintenance and a recurring $250,000 annual capital project funding target as board priorities. The superintendent told the board that major decisions about capital, land appraisal or purchases, and employee contracts over the next several years will have long-term consequences for the district.

Jamie Hilstrom moved to adopt the DOP; Eric Gordy seconded. The motion passed unanimously. Board members requested additional behavioral and counselor‑service data that district staff said they would compile and share as part of follow-up reporting.
