Cynthia, representing city crash review staff, reported to the Transportation Committee that on May 31, 2026 at 4:42 p.m. a vehicle exiting I‑94 turned left onto South State Street and, as it merged into southbound traffic, the driver suffered a medical episode and lost control.
Cynthia said the vehicle crossed a concrete median island, traveled into the opposing lanes, struck traffic signal utility boxes, and then left the roadway where it struck a light pole and came to rest. She said both the driver (a 58‑year‑old man) and the passenger (a 60‑year‑old woman) sustained life‑threatening injuries; as of June 9, both were in stable condition.
The crash review found environmental conditions were clear and dry and that all nearby traffic signals were functioning. The airbag control module recovered from the vehicle recorded multiple strike events, and the module did not shut down the engine until the final strike; the highest recorded speed during the event was about 68 mph with a final impact speed recorded at about 56 mph, according to the report.
Because the root cause was a medical event that incapacitated the driver, the crash review team did not identify Vision Zero‑related dangerous behaviors nor recommend immediate engineering, education, or enforcement countermeasures tied to the crash. "Due to the medical nature of this crash, we do not have any near‑term, midterm, or long‑term strategies for enforcement or engineering that have been identified from the plan," Cynthia said.
The committee noted the seriousness of the injuries and accepted the department’s summary; staff will continue to coordinate with the police department and provide updates as appropriate.
