Marquette County to pursue ordinance on animal-drawn vehicle lighting after reported non‑compliance

Marquette County staff advised the Traffic Safety Committee on Oct. 1 that the county will pursue an ordinance to address non-compliance for animal-drawn vehicles that lack proper lighting.
Committee discussion noted that different sects of the Amish community live in Marquette County and that most comply with existing lighting guidance. However, staff and members said some Amish drivers in the Westfield area are not using flashing amber lights or the reflective orange triangles commonly recommended for animal-drawn vehicles.
The committee did not adopt the ordinance at the meeting; members indicated they will continue outreach and work with the Amish community toward a resolution before any formal enforcement step is taken.
