Highway department reports 2025 budget shortfall; state reimbursements to cover overage

Marquette County Highway staff told the committee on Jan. 20 that year-end accounting shows the department finished 2025 with a $285,583.99 shortfall. Brian Trebiatowski reported December county costs of $238,974, with winter maintenance accounting for $208,400 of that total.
Trebiatowski provided detailed state-level totals: RMA costs for December were $150,874.05 and RMA spending for 2025 totaled $1,102,156; DMA spending for 2025 was $1,127,872.07 and TMA totaled $11,838. He said multiple reimbursements were received from the state during the year and that, once year-end accounting is completed, a transfer from Fund 29 will cover the department overage.
The committee also reviewed township and municipal work figures: townships recorded $185,293.15 of work in December (labor $49,965); villages and the city recorded $5,006 in work. Total work done for townships in 2025 was $1,935,083 with $527,620 in labor.
Committee members did not request immediate budget cuts at the meeting; staff flagged reimbursements and an internal transfer as the mechanism to address the deficit. The committee approved the meeting agenda and minutes before entering financial reports.
