Harford County Veterans Commission approves April minutes, reviews outreach and resource planning

The Harford County Commission on Veterans’ Affairs approved the April meeting minutes and proceeded through routine and substantive agenda items including case assistance totals, committee updates and member reports.
Chairman Bob Brown reported that the commission received 24 assistance requests in April: eight medical, seven claims, two employment, one housing, two education, two financial, one tax and one legal request. The commission voted to approve the April minutes, which will be posted on the Veterans Commission website.
In old business members reviewed recent events: Barbara Travers reported that the HCC SALUTE ceremony on April 22 drew about 35 attendees, and the April 29 VSO Open Mic Listening Session included representatives from multiple VSO posts and remarks from Harford County Executive Bob Cassilly. The May 5 Mission Strong Summit, hosted by APG Garrison with DVMF and Harford County, drew 62 attendees and included a military spouse listening session.
Under projects and committee business, members discussed America 250 activities and identified a need for volunteers to cover VSO posts after Brian Kelly’s resignation; no volunteers were reported during the meeting. Jim Ports updated the planning for the Veterans Resource Fair and said the subcommittee will finalize vendor lists and send Save‑the‑Date notices. Denise Carnaggio and Ports reported that strategic‑plan interviews with local organizations are ahead of schedule and that collected information will be added to the Resource Guide.
Members reviewed upcoming operational events and logistics: the Freedom 250 truck museum (May 11–13), a Claims Clinic that requires help setting up roughly 50 tables and 125 chairs (May 13 set up; VA Claims Clinic on May 14 at Edgewood Recreation Center), multiple Memorial Day programs on May 25 at several posts, and on‑post activities including a Farmers Market on June 11. Members committed to attend specific commemorations where feasible.
Colonel Johnson announced that Roye Williams is Harford County’s first Purple Star School and praised Tiffany Johnson, the school liaison, for her role in the designation. He also noted retail changes on post, the upcoming change of command for Major General Turinetti on Aug. 13, and that requests for O‑6 and above guest speakers will now require longer lead times through PAO and legal review. There were no visitor comments and the meeting adjourned at 7:52 p.m.
