The Brooksville City Council voted unanimously on Aug. 19 to appoint Jody Young to fill the vacant Seat 4 until the November 2024 election. The council moved and seconded the appointment after hearing brief statements from applicants and members of the public.
Jody Young, a 25-year Brooksville resident who said she serves as vice president of Brooksville Main Street and previously worked for the City of Bushnell in accounts payable and as finance director (later serving as city manager), told the council she would bring governmental finance experience for the short term. "I'm excited to serve," Young said.
Mayor Bell moved to amend the agenda to hear the appointment early; the council approved the change and then heard remarks from applicants including Alex Rivera and John Bas. After a motion to appoint Young and a second, the clerk conducted a roll-call vote and recorded ayes; the mayor then congratulated Young and invited Judge Barbara Jo Bell to administer the oath of office.
The appointment fills a temporary vacancy until voters choose a successor in November. Council members noted opportunities for other residents to serve on boards and commissions and encouraged continued civic engagement.
The council returned to the regular agenda after the swearing-in.
