Division of Public Works outlines maintenance plans and commends mowing crew on Rustic Roads

WINCHESTER HALL, Frederick — Division of Public Works officials briefed the Frederick County Rustic Roads Commission on May 13 about recent and planned maintenance activities across the Rustic Roads network, underscoring routine seasonal work and operations to preserve roadway character.

Jason Stitt, Division Director for Public Works, and Gary Shankle, Assistant Department Head of Highway Operations, presented an overview of recent and upcoming work, including seasonal mowing, surface maintenance and scheduling priorities for roads designated in the Rustic Roads program. Commission members followed with observations about field performance.

Commissioners singled out the district mowing crew and the foreman responsible for Bessie Clemson Road for praise, saying the roadside work has been effective in maintaining the rural character and safety of the corridor. The commission noted the positive impact of consistent mowing and maintenance on resident satisfaction and roadway appearance.

The presentation did not include new capital projects or budget allocations for the Rustic Roads network. Instead, staff framed the discussion as operational updates about ongoing maintenance cycles and coordination between Public Works and the Division of Planning and Permitting. Commissioners indicated interest in continued reporting on maintenance outcomes and coordination with relevant subcommittees.

The commission will review further updates at its June meeting; no formal action or vote on maintenance policy was taken at the May 13 session.
