Merrimac commission invited to accessible-trail planning as chair reports DCR meetings

The Merrimac Open Space Committee is forming a subcommittee to develop an accessible-trail plan and has invited the Commission on Disability to participate in early-stage planning.
At the Oct. 1 commission meeting, members heard that the Open Space Committee’s process is in the beginning stages; the commission agreed to participate and to provide input on accessibility considerations for trail design and access points.
Chairman Christopher Gaudet reported he has attended two meetings with DCR regarding plans for accessible recreation areas and said he will continue to update the commission as those discussions progress. No funding decisions, schedules, or detailed design proposals were presented at the Oct. 1 meeting.
Commission members also noted related outstanding items in old business — including a $50,000 earmark request to refinish the Donaghue School basketball court and create accessible access points and an FY26 MOD grant for curb cuts — but recorded that both items currently have no updates.
The commission’s role in the accessible-trail planning will be advisory; members expect to participate in the Open Space Committee subcommittee when it is formed and to coordinate with DCR meetings as appropriate.
