Center for the Arts site plan approved to add ADA ramp and reorient main entrance

The Murphysboro Planning Commission approved a site plan for exterior accessibility, landscaping and hardscape improvements at the Center for the Arts, authorizing removal of one frontage column to make room for a new zigzag ADA ramp, a reoriented entrance with two doors, lighting and new signage.
Staff presenter Holly described the proposal’s goal to remove barriers that currently force patrons through backstage areas and trash routes. Holly said the project reorganizes the frontage so the main public entrance provides both stairs and an accessible ramp while preserving the historic facade. Holly also noted landscaping changes, raised planter nodes and space for future public art.
Center for the Arts director Regina (Miss Regina) told commissioners the project is "fully grant funded through the Christy Houston Foundation and our partnership with Main Street Murphy'sboro" and that the group hopes to begin construction by the end of July with completion before Thanksgiving. Regina said the arts center serves about "26,000 patrons a year" and estimated that "almost 60% of those patrons have some sort of ADA need," framing the project as an equity and accessibility improvement.
Commissioners asked clarifying questions about materials and timelines, then moved and voted to approve the site plan subject to staff comments. Staff will track grant-related conditions and confirm the construction schedule as the project advances.
