District presenter outlines TSS grant residency to grow teacher pipeline

At a PHARR-SAN JUAN-ALAMO ISD meeting, a presenter described a new teacher residency funded by a TSS grant and a prep allotment that opens year-long resident slots to instructional aides and clerical staff who hold degrees.

The presenter said the residents will be "matched up with a host teacher so that they can basically from day one to day 187 see what teaching is all about," emphasizing daily classroom coaching, feedback and planning aimed at growing local staff.

The program is a partnership, the presenter said, between PHARR-SAN JUAN-ALAMO ISD (PSJA), ACT-RGV and Region One. Participants will be in classrooms with host teachers "every single day learning, getting feedback, planning, and doing all those great things," the presenter said.

Eligibility and the pathway were described in practical terms: candidates need a college degree, must complete an interview process and are selected based on district needs, and must register with ACT-RGV to begin the certification pathway. "So in order for you to qualify, you only need to have a degree," the presenter said.

The presenter framed the residency as a local workforce strategy: by investing in existing staff who are "already part of the community," the district can develop teachers who return to teach in local classrooms. The presenter encouraged interested staff to watch for an upcoming email seeking applications for the next cohort.
