Hayward proclaims June 19 'Juneth' and spotlights community Juneteenth events

Hayward's City Council on June 16 proclaimed June 19, 2026 as Juneth National Independence Day and highlighted community events planned for the weekend. Mayor Mark Selenus read a proclamation tracing Juneth's origins to the June 19, 1865 emancipation in Galveston, Texas, and outlined the city's educational and programming plans for the holiday, including a ceremonial flag‑raising and a Juneth celebration at Mount Eden High School on Saturday, June 20.

Valita Savannah, founder of the Dwayne P. Wiggins Foundation, thanked the council and said the foundation will provide free music lessons and entertainment at the Juneth celebration, noting music's role in community and youth development: "music was always a outlet for Dwayne and it was a way that he was able to make a living and support his family and support us." Janna Nicks, vice president of the Hayward Tri City Alumni Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, and youth representatives from the NAACP also expressed appreciation and described local programming and scholarships their groups provide.

Sarah Lamn, president of the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District, described the interagency partnership behind the event and the growth of local Juneth observances. Council Member Roach credited Council Member Andrews's leadership in expanding recognition and community partnerships over several years.

City staff said Juneth activities will include a reading series, live performances and family activities, and noted the city will close government offices on Friday in recognition of the holiday. The council's proclamation directs library and cultural programming and flags to be displayed on City Hall Plaza in the days leading to the celebration.
