"I've had it for almost 30 years. I restore old cars and motorcycles," Sherrod said, explaining the front half of the building would allow passersby to view vehicles and memorabilia but would not function as a public retail space.
Commissioners reviewed photographs and historical context, noting the original building burned in the late 1950s or early 1960s and that the existing front wall had been rebuilt. Commissioners asked about materials and proportions; Sherrod said he would match a modernized 1960s renovation style using silver anodized aluminum for the doors and add brick pillars to align with the façade. He told the commission the proposed roll‑up doors measure about 7 feet wide by 8 feet high.
A commissioner raised concerns about the property's condition, noting interior floors had settled and that some portions of the house appeared in disrepair. Sherrod acknowledged interior issues and said he is painting trim and replacing some interior doors while preserving the front brickwork for the proposed storefront look.
Commissioner Harden moved to approve the request "as written." After a second, the recording secretary conducted a roll call. Commissioners Michael Hendricks, Jeff Brown, Jamie Simmons, Dave Jones, Natasha Crabb and Greg Gallant each voted yes; the motion carried and the commission issued a certificate of appropriateness for the work.
Following the vote, Sherrod thanked the commission. The chair closed the item and noted an unrelated personnel vacancy: Jenny Teague has applied to fill a commission seat and the board will consider that appointment at its first meeting in July.
The commission took no other formal action on funding or changes to zoning; the approval applies only to the exterior appearance as presented to the commission.
