Sheriff reports on enforcement and grant opportunities; town announces Earth Day, cleanup results and rabies clinic

Sheriff Ellison told the Duncan Common Council on April 10 that the sheriff’s office is stepping up efforts to reduce speeding and other risky off-highway-vehicle behaviors.
Patrol Lieutenant Gabe Guerrero described a $100,000 OHV grant the department is pursuing and said grants of up to $735,000 are available to purchase off-road vehicles to enforce laws related to underage operation, helmet use and drinking. "There are grants available for up to $735k, allowing them to purchase off road vehicles to enforce the law," Guerrero said.
Heather Seegmiller reported on a recent volunteer cleanup: "About 20 people showed up, employees, the sheriff and his wife, Morenci Fire, and others. ADOT gave them 50 bags, they filled 60 total, it took 5 ADOT trucks to pick up the trash." The council was told the town may hold another cleanup in the fall.
Sheriff Ellison also corrected the timing for an Earth Day event: it is set for April 25 at Centennial Park from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with children's activities (ladybugs and worms) and volunteers welcome.
Town Manager Hinton provided several project updates, including possible painting of Town Hall, resubmitting a congressional directed spending grant for High Street and Main Street, pursuing a $1 million road grant to chip-seal Carlisle and Campbell, moving equipment to start a lift station, and expected completion of a skate park by the end of summer. Hinton announced a drive-through rabies clinic at the Duncan Fairgrounds on April 26 from 7 to 9 a.m., charging $20 cash per animal.
