Drexel Heights board renews regional HazMat agreement after Picture Rocks withdraws

The Drexel Heights Fire District Governing Board on Feb. 28 voted 4-0 to adopt Resolution 2020-04, authorizing an amendment to the regional Hazardous Materials Team intergovernmental agreement that extends the partnership for a five-year term.
Board member James Bertrand moved to adopt the resolution and Laura Dailey seconded; the motion passed unanimously. Chief Douglas Chappell told the board that Picture Rocks Fire District has withdrawn from the regional team because it “no longer has the trained and certified staff needed for participation,” and that the amendment sets a new five-year term renewable one time.
The amended agreement keeps Drexel Heights aligned with other local fire and emergency agencies to pool hazmat response resources. The parties listed in the IGA include Drexel Heights, Avra Valley, Golder Ranch, Green Valley, Northwest and Rincon Valley fire districts, the City of Tucson Fire Department and the Pima County Office of Emergency Management; one member (Picture Rocks) declined to continue participation.
Board members and staff described the regional arrangement as preferable to attempting to maintain a single-district hazmat capability, noting shared training and equipment efficiencies. The board’s approval authorizes the district to execute the amendment and continue participating in the Pima Regional HazMat Response Team.
The district will proceed with the amendment execution and maintain membership records for operational planning and mutual aid coordination. The board received copies of the amendment as part of the meeting packet and recorded the formal vote in the meeting minutes.
