Elgin students select lion as new visual mascot for 'Maroons'

Student leaders from Elgin High School presented the results of a multi-month, student-led mascot process and announced the lion as the new visual representation to accompany the longstanding ‘Maroons’ name.
Emma Valdivia and other student leaders explained that a principal advisory committee of 32 students conducted open nominations, winnowed an initial pool to 11 options and then used public surveys (nearly 1,500 responses in round two and about 1,396 in the final vote) to select three finalists. The final round of voting produced the lion as the winner.
The students proposed creating two lion mascots — a maroon-colored male and a complementary female lioness — and described plans to place the mascot on spirit wear, athletic uniforms and branded materials while retaining the Maroons identity. They showed preliminary designs and a short announcement video and asked the board to support student leadership and community engagement efforts associated with the rollout.
Board members and administrators congratulated the student leaders and thanked athletic and school staff who assisted the process. The board did not need to take formal action to adopt the visual mascot during the meeting; students said they would continue work on final artwork and implementation.
