Deputy chief seeks permission to apply for $10,000 forestry fire protection grant

Deputy Chief Brian Barnes told the committee the fire department plans to apply for a $10,000 Forestry Fire Protection (FFP) grant to purchase wildland firefighting gear and equipment not currently carried on apparatus. "We want to put in for a $10,000 grant in order to outfit our department … with wildland fire gear," Barnes said, explaining that the grant is roughly a 50% match and the department would seek matching funds from remaining UTV funds, budgetary items and other grants or donations.
Barnes said the application must be entered by July 1 and that award decisions are expected in the fall. If approved, the city would purchase equipment and then receive 50% reimbursement after grant approval and inspection, he said.
The committee moved and seconded a recommendation that the Common Council approve submission of the grant application pending fire and police commission review; the motion carried by voice vote.
Next steps: staff will submit the FFP application before the July 1 deadline and, if the grant is awarded, follow grant procurement and reimbursement procedures.
