Alexander County awards Sterling Road CDBG construction contract to Bale Construction

Alexander County commissioners voted on June 15 to approve a recommendation to award the Sterling Road CDBG construction contract to Bale Construction Company of Statesville.
Staff reported that bids for the Sterling Road project were opened June 1. The lowest bidder, DDI of Hickory, submitted a bid the staff found incomplete because an incorrect bid form had been filed; that bid was therefore deemed noncompliant. The next-lowest complete bid, from Bale Construction, was recommended for award in the amount of $452,779.25. County staff stated the project is financed through a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and will not draw on county tax revenues.
Commissioners thanked Sherry Long of the Western Piedmont Council of Governments for her role shepherding the grant and the procurement process. One commissioner who had inspected the road described severe pavement damage and a washout near a T intersection, saying the road should have been repaired years ago.
What the board decided: A motion to approve the recommended contract award was made and seconded; the board approved the recommendation and directed staff to proceed with grant-funded project implementation.
Next steps: With the contract award approved, staff can execute the CDBG-funded contract and coordinate construction scheduling and required grant compliance reporting.
