The Boynton Beach City Commission voted 4-1 to purchase Axon Drone First Responder (DFR) docks after a presentation from the RealTime Crime Center supervisor and the police command staff outlining operational benefits and fiscal timing. Staff described a package that includes drones, docking stations, 5G connectivity, thermal cameras and integrated mapping that would provide rapid aerial situational awareness across roughly three miles per dock and operate 24/7. The supervisor reported the program's trial performance: about 145 flight hours year-to-date, 82% helpful intel and much faster first-on-scene times in pilot deployments.
Chief staff and budget presenters said the first payment under the proposed contract would not be due until Oct. 1, 2027, and that the fiscal impact could be covered in part by traffic safety funds (red-light and school-zone camera revenues). One commissioner opposed the purchase on principle, saying the city should prioritize personnel and wage issues during a tight budget year; others said the program saves responder time and can protect public safety, framing the cost (about $65,000 per year net after partner contributions) as sustainable. A motion to approve passed 4-1.
The approved package locks pricing for multiple years and includes technology refreshes; staff indicated the docks would enable immediate aerial intelligence to assist officers, assist in searches for missing persons and support disaster assessments.
