The Hammond City Capital Improvement Board on a unanimous 6–0 vote approved funding allocation No. 327 to buy and install an inline grinder at the Sportsplex sewer lift station.
Board members moved and seconded the measure — moved by Commissioner Muench and seconded by Councilman Recos — after a staff member described repeated pump failures that have required frequent weekend service calls, particularly during tournaments. According to the staff member, “it prevents the clogging from happening” and the grinder “should shred the material up to the point where the pumps wouldn't fail in the future.” The purchase is to be made through Cellular Plumbing for $122,500.
Why it matters: Board members said the Sportplex lift station has experienced recurring failures when non-waste items and paper towels are flushed, resulting in repeated emergency calls to the sanitary district and contractors. The inline grinder was presented as a preventive, operational fix that staff and board members expect will reduce breakdowns and after-hours repair costs.
The motion passed on roll-call votes from Commissioners Moore, Muda, Prieto, Racos, Councilman Salinas and Button, with six votes in favor and no dissent. The board did not discuss alternate technologies or a separate public-education campaign on acceptable toilet disposals during the recorded discussion.
Next steps: Staff will proceed with the contract/purchase order to Cellular Plumbing and schedule installation under the approved allocation.
