City plans July virtual public workshop; initial family survey shows 49 responses

City planning staff told the Sustainable Plan Update Steering Committee on June 17 that a virtual public workshop will be scheduled in July to mirror the recent in-person workshop and to give residents who could not attend an additional chance to provide input.
Paula McMichael, planning director, said the workshop format will be similar to the in-person event and staff plan to use Zoom plus a secondary input tool to compile feedback in real time. Staff asked attendees to RSVP so they can manage turnout and consider a second session if needed; a tentative date discussed in the meeting was July 23 in the afternoon.
McMichael also updated the committee on an online family survey created to gather input from families with children. "We have 49 results as of Monday," she said, and described the preliminary breakdown as 40 responses from residents and nine from non-residents; staff said 39 respondents identified as full-time residents, and that four respondents reported homeschooled children. She said the survey has been distributed to families registered with the recreation department and to the Sanibel School and SESI for wider distribution, and staff will prepare a brief summary of responses shortly.
Committee members recommended outreach to homeschool groups and the Sanibel C School (a local adult-education/continuing-education program) to broaden the sample. Staff said the initial recording and about 20 minutes of presentation from the in-person workshop will be posted to the city’s Sanibel plan update webpage and to the city's YouTube page; table-based interactions from the in-person event were not recorded.
Next steps: staff will publish the recorded presentation online, finalize workshop date and format, continue distributing the family survey and prepare a short summary of collected responses for the July steering committee meeting.
