Denmark moves forward with salt‑and‑sand shed design ahead of August bond deadline

The Denmark Select Board on June 16 authorized staff to begin design work with Sebago Tech to develop building options and engineering for a proposed salt‑and‑sand shed and related site work ahead of a fall bond application.

Staff said Sebago Tech will help evaluate building types, foundations and the pros and cons of metal, fabric dome and other options. The board discussed budget thresholds and whether staff should proceed if initial quotes come in under a specified cap; a staff member suggested authorizing work up to a modest limit so consultants can proceed quickly.

Board members flagged the August 3 deadline for the bond application, noting that accepted bids and final documentation would be needed to secure bonding and that the schedule requires rapid RFP development, bidding and review. Staff recommended beginning work immediately so a preferred building choice and an RFP can be prepared for posting within a few weeks.

The board asked that any consultant proposal include a full scope and price, rather than piecemeal tasks that could leave essential design elements unfinished. Staff said preliminary estimates recalled from earlier work were around $30,000 for full services but that part of that work (site plan and conditional use permit) has already been completed.

Next steps: staff will request a written quote from Sebago Tech covering site design and foundation engineering, present options to the board at the June 30 or early July meeting, and, if the board concurs, issue an RFP to allow timely bidding before the August 3 bond application deadline.
