Union City reviews zoning changes for pools and sheds, sets sidewalk and school-crossing steps

Union City Borough Council considered several planning and infrastructure items on July 9, asking the solicitor to draft zoning amendments on pool and shed allowances, selecting an engineer for a school-crossing feasibility study and reviewing sidewalk and RT 97 project costs.
Council discussed proposed zoning changes to allow above-ground pools on adjoining vacant lots and removable sheds up to 144 square feet on a gravel base, skids or pillars with no setback from the adjoining property line; front-yard setbacks would remain. Solicitor Tim Wachter was asked to prepare suggested ordinance language for council review.
On infrastructure, the borough manager said the TA Set-Aside Sidewalk Project will begin Monday, July 15, 2024, and council agreed to use WRA, LLP, the county’s appointed engineer, to advance the approved school crossing feasibility study. Council also reviewed the RT 97 grant budget, which provided $10,000 for engineering and inspection but warned that extended project durations, contractor issues or encountering rock during excavation could require additional borough monitoring costs.
The council also approved a short-term mowing arrangement: Capela Landscape will provide four weeks of mowing beginning July 8, 2024, with the option to continue. Adecco provided a candidate name for summer public-works help to be hired at about $18 per hour for roughly 32 hours per week if needed.
