Union City Borough Council voted unanimously on July 9 to proceed with the public-meeting process and a resolution seeking the Broadband Ready Communities designation, authorizing the Erie Area Council of Governments (EACOG) to serve as the borough’s Municipal Broadband Champion.
Borough staff described the program as a way to align permitting and planning steps with best practices so that additional internet service providers can consider entering the borough. "This creates an opportunity for other ISP’s to come into the Borough creating other options for residents," the manager said during the council update. Councilor Kerns moved to proceed and Councilor Joyce seconded; the motion carried unanimously.
Council directed staff to schedule the required public meeting and to proceed with the application process through EACOG. The move is intended to expand competitive broadband options by ensuring permitting and municipal requirements are clear to prospective providers.
