Council discusses license plate readers and parking-lot changes; defers zoning amendments until solicitor present

At the June 25 Union City Borough Council meeting Police Chief David Pernice described the functionality of License Plate Readers (LPRs), saying the system can record video, search plates and assist investigations anywhere they have access to the system. Chief Pernice framed LPRs as a tool to better protect the community.
Council discussed proposed amendments to the parking ordinance, including changes to front-end parking in Municipal Lot No. 2. Council asked Streets Supervisor Bob Phillips to review the lot layout with angled parking before further ordinance changes are considered.
Separately, council decided to defer discussion of proposed zoning amendments related to small games of chance and allowing pools in vacant adjoining lots until the Solicitor is present at a future meeting.
No binding ordinance changes or zoning amendments were adopted at the meeting; council directed staff and the Streets Supervisor to prepare the lot layout review and to place zoning ordinance items on a future agenda when legal counsel can attend.
