Council declines to advance hire of full-time officer Kenneth Fye; decision deferred

Union City Borough Council did not advance a motion to hire Kenneth Fye as a full-time police officer after a motion failed for lack of a second on July 9.
Police Chief David Pernice told council that Fye had passed civil service testing and the background check and that the chief had “nothing but good comments about him.” The Civil Service Commission provided a certified list showing only one candidate met testing and background requirements and recommended Fye for hire. Councilor Steadman moved to hire Fye; the motion did not receive a second and therefore died. The council agreed to revisit the matter at a future meeting.
Chief Pernice later asked councilors why the hire motion failed; no councilor provided a reason during the meeting. The council did not take alternate action on police staffing during the session.
