Commission sets June target and tasking for State of the Environment report, subcommittees outline next steps

At its Jan. 12 meeting the Orange County Commission for the Environment reviewed progress on the State of the Environment (SOE) report and set a target to complete the document by June. Chair Regina Baratta asked members to aim for a June finish as subcommittees reported on drafts, data gaps and next steps.
Aimee Vandemark asked for member assistance on the Tree Canopy Study and said former member Bradley Saul plans to help assimilate data for the report. The Air & Energy subcommittee reported that drafts exist for most topics and scheduled a subcommittee meeting for Jan. 26 to address outstanding scope issues. The Water Resources subcommittee discussed data collection and what it would take to replicate Wake County’s groundwater study in Orange County. The Land Resources subcommittee reviewed candidates for indicator species, planned outreach to Natural Heritage Site staff, and noted the need for ADA-compliant visuals.
Members flagged the time needed to finish outstanding topics and agreed to use staff support to close gaps. Wesley Poole and other staff were listed as resources for data coordination and accessibility. No final deadline change beyond the June target was adopted during the meeting; subcommittees were assigned follow-up meetings and staff assistance to meet the goal.
Next steps include the Air & Energy subcommittee meeting Jan. 26, Aimee Vandemark’s outreach to Natural Heritage Site on indicator species, and continued work to make report materials accessible.
