Council authorizes FEMA grant applications for firefighting gear and three staffing positions

The Stillwater City Council on June 15 authorized two FEMA grant applications to bolster the fire department’s equipment and staffing.
Resolution CC-2026-11 directs staff to apply for Assistance to Firefighters Grant funds to replace self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and related gear. Staff listed proposed purchases including 67 new SCBAs, 134 air cylinders, eight rapid intervention team packs and face masks for each firefighter, and gave estimated total project and cost-share figures. Council approved submission of the application and authorized the mayor or vice mayor to sign related documents; the vote was 4–0.
Resolution CC-2026-12 authorizes application for a SAFER grant to fund three new full-time firefighter positions for a three-year period. Staff said the city would not hire until the grant is awarded and that the city expects to absorb the positions’ full cost after the three-year funded period; staff also said the city could reapply for an extension or additional funding at the end of that period. The council adopted the resolution 4–0.
Both applications were advanced with unanimous council support; staff will submit the required documents and, if awarded, return with implementation details and any budget amendments.
