Duncan postpones $63,280 water tower maintenance while seeking grant options

The Village of Duncan postponed a planned water tower maintenance contract at its May 12 meeting after officials said they will explore grant funding before committing funds.
Utility Superintendent Doug Michalak presented pictures and a Maguire Iron quote of $63,280 for repairs and an interior coating that would require draining the tower, applying primer and epoxy, and other repairs including removing spire rods and exterior touch-ups. Michalak said Maguire Iron assured the village the work could be completed this summer and proposed a payment schedule that would allow the village to pay half after the new budget begins on Oct. 1 and the remainder on Oct. 1, 2026.
Trustee Van Steyn asked whether replacing the tower was an option; Michalak reported that a new tower would cost "a million or more." Chair Gary Schlesinger recommended staff seek possible grant funding before spending local funds. Schlesinger moved to postpone the tower maintenance until grant funding opportunities are reviewed; Lance Denbo seconded the motion, and the board voted unanimously to postpone.
