Resident asks city to remove hazardous maple tree near school

Pat James, a Maxwell resident who said she has lived in town for nearly 64 years, asked the council to help remove a maple tree she says is rotting and poses a hazard to students who walk past it. "I had my son run a metal rod through that cavity ... it went in 19 in," James said, describing the size of the cavity and reporting that an independent arborist recommended removal.
Council members said they had received James's complaint and the arborist report that accompanied it. Staff said the city uses its own certified arborist for formal determinations and that, once the city arborist's report is complete, the council will consider a recommendation. "Once he gives me his report we'll make a determination at that time," a council member said, noting staff would bring the city's report back to the council.
Parks and Open Spaces staff told the council they recommend issuing a request for competitive proposals for tree-removal work and can use language from the submitted arborist report to solicit bids. The council discussed grouping several trees into one request to improve bidding economics.
The council did not take immediate action beyond directing staff to wait for the city's arborist report and to proceed with bid planning through Parks & Open Spaces. Further council review will follow after the city arborist's findings are available.
