Steelbrook Greenway construction underway; micropile testing, fall completion targeted

Town engineering staff updated the Public Works Subcommittee on progress for Steelbrook Greenway No. 2 and described timelines for related corridor projects.
Mike Zoler, Engineering Tech 2, reported crews installed 16 micropiles (eight on each side) for the southern subbase and said two test piles were tested to "240,000 pounds of tensile strength" without failure. He explained the micropiles are designed to protect bridge abutments from scour: the piles extend about 25 feet, are embedded roughly 5 feet into bedrock, and are grouted to fill fissures in the rock.
Zoler said the pedestrian bridge is being fabricated in Alabama and that state Department of Transportation representatives were on site there to inspect the steel. Staff told the subcommittee the project remains on schedule for completion in the fall.
Separately, staff said a funding request for Steelbrook Greenway No. 3 (Unico Bridge to the existing pedestrian bridge) will be placed on the town council agenda for July 20. That work would replace three culverts, place a modest subgrade and pave a 12-foot-wide trail with 2-foot shoulders. Staff said the Urban Act grant administered by the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development would reimburse the project at 100%, but that using state money increases administrative requirements and oversight.
The subcommittee received the report and had no further questions about the micropiles or schedule.
