Beech Grove unveils 'Profile of a Learner' to guide curriculum and classroom practice

District leaders presented the finalized Beech Grove City Schools Profile of a Learner, describing it as the product of a year-long Designing Systems That Work engagement with the National Center on Education and the Economy (NCEE) and funding from the Lilly Endowment.
The presenter said the profile establishes eight core competencies to be developed from preschool through graduation: character, communication, community building, critical thinking, innovation, leadership, teamwork and work ethic. Administrators said the work included stakeholder engagement with teachers, students, families, community members and business partners and will now move from design to implementation.
Officials described next steps as developing grade-level learning progressions, aligning competencies to curriculum and instruction, creating opportunities for students to demonstrate growth, and building systems for measuring progress so the profile becomes an authentic part of classroom experience.
The presenter framed the profile as broader than academics alone: it is intended to prepare students “not only to graduate, but to thrive in life, to contribute to their community, and pursue a future filled with opportunity and purpose,” and to reflect the community’s values about student readiness.
Board members acknowledged the work and thanked staff and community partners; the district said the DSTW execution team has already begun planning implementation for the upcoming school year.
