New fire station near move-in but key systems still pending; board plans phased move and later grand opening

Representatives of the Swansea fire department updated the Select Board on the new fire station's readiness and a proposed timeline for a phased move-in.

Department leaders said trucks could be parked in the new station after a final walk-through planned for June 29, but several critical systems are not yet installed, including the backup generator, the SCBA compressor and specialized washer/dryer gear. The absence of a functioning generator would leave the station without lights, door openers and other systems during outages; department members warned that full operational readiness depends on those installations.

The department proposed a phased approach: move apparatus to the new bay to begin responses from the building while finishing administrative and support installations over several weeks. Staff discussed supply-chain delays (generator delivery uncertain) and the need for IT/phone hookups. The board approved proceeding with a phased move and asked staff to schedule a later grand opening and ribbon-cutting once the station is fully equipped and the generator and other safety equipment are in place.

Board members also discussed logistics for a ceremonial presentation to recognize veteran members and to coordinate the date with upcoming town events (Fourth of July, Old Home Days). The department will confirm equipment timelines and return to the board with firm dates for full commissioning and a public celebration.
