The Canal Winchester Landmarks Commission on May 26 approved three applications with conditions and tabled two others pending additional details.
Approved items - CA26013 (80 West Waterlue Street): Approval granted to replace a vinyl applique on the front portico with dimensional aluminum logo lettering for a dental/orthodontic practice; the commission conditioned approval on relocating the address numbers to the horizontal header above the front door to improve visibility. Mr. Moore (applicant/representative) and staff confirmed the ground monument sign will remain.
- CA26014 (159 Washington Street): The commission approved replacement of damaged asphalt shingles and associated roof repairs after storm damage, with a condition that the drip edge remain white to match existing trim. Staff noted the project includes a ridge vent and upgraded sheathing where needed.
- CA26015 (46 East Columbus Street): The commission approved an infill rear-yard fence with several specific conditions: maximum height 42 in, preferred finished height set between 36–42 in, flat-top profile, 1x4 pickets, 4x4 posts, no finials, and spacing to match existing picket pattern. Commissioners discussed materials and recommended cedar if the owner paints immediately; the applicant agreed to the conditions.
Tabled items - CA26017 (121 West Columbus Street — pergola): Tabled for incomplete details on finish, structural connection to the house and long-term material choice; commissioners asked for clearer drawings and finish specifications.
- CA26018 (74 North High Street — exterior remodel): Commissioners generally supported upgrading vinyl siding to a Hardie plank profile and the proposed trim package but asked the applicant to provide manufacturer cut sheets for the proposed wood-clad windows and exterior lighting and to consider alternatives to vinyl shutters. The commission approved a motion to table or approve with those requested clarifications.
Votes and next steps: Approved items carry specific conditions noted above; staff will stamp the permit applications once signed permits and revised drawings are submitted. Tabled applicants were asked to provide additional specifications and, where applicable, manufacturer cut sheets and finish samples.
