Lacey Museum reports grand-opening turnout, hires part-time collections assistant and readies exhibits

The Lacey Museum reported a busy spring and summer slate: staff said the museum’s grand-opening event drew roughly 150 visitors and that volunteers and tour guides helped make the day successful. The curator reported summer programs (Creativity Corner and a July scavenger hunt) and said next season’s history-talk series starts in September.
Staff announced a new part-time collections assistant, Tieran Van Sutenddale, who began work June 3 at 17 hours per week to help with collections management and to prepare materials for the Russell House research center. The curator said that staffing will improve record-keeping and enable the museum to support research services and the long-term development of the Russell House site.
Under the statewide America 250 (America’s 250th anniversary) initiative the museum will display five artifacts selected by public vote in a City Hall exhibit through the rest of the year; the top vote-getter was a treaty-tree photograph followed by a Mount Rainier mosaic and other locally significant items. The museum will also participate in statewide museum day on Aug. 8 and the communications department plans a 60-day social campaign leading to the city’s 60th anniversary in December.
In collections and marker work the curator said wording for a new historic marker is prepared and the marker order is near; staff noted that some marker plaques are already installed inside nominated properties and that an exterior marker remains on the work plan.
The curator asked commissioners to share outreach support for the museum’s new Facebook and Instagram accounts; early uptake included about 100 Facebook followers and 66 Instagram followers within the first weeks.
Next steps: staff will confirm marker production timelines, continue staffing and collections work at the Russell House, and bring interactive map prototypes to the commission for review later this year.
