Planning staff reports steady permit activity: 125 residential, 62 commercial plans since June

Mr. Wilson, representing the city's planning and development department, briefed the council April 26 on departmental activity since he joined in June. He reported 125 residential building plans and 62 commercial building plans among other permit and casework and described a variety of staff-level approvals handled in-office.
"We've seen 125 residential building plans, 62 commercial building plans, 34 sign plans, 14 zoning variances, nine pre-application meetings, seven special use permits, and 16 other planning commission items," Mr. Wilson said, listing work completed by the department and noting 45 staff-level actions such as minor subdivisions, property-boundary verifications, zoning verification letters and tower-use permits.
Wilson highlighted staff professional development, referencing the 2025 American Planning Association bi-state conference in St. Louis where staff attended sessions including an Arkansas legislative update and planning classes. He also thanked three interns (Ally Laura, Haley Greer and Blake Huffman) who assisted the department during the year and noted their academic affiliations and career plans.
The council did not take action on the planning report; related agenda items moving forward include first readings of dedications and zoning-code amendments that will return for subsequent readings and votes. Planning staff noted that some minor subdivisions require council action when right-of-way dedication is involved.
