The Village of Eagle Board of Trustees voted Feb. 3 to adopt Resolution 2026-02 and place a ballot question on the May 12, 2026 Statewide Primary Election asking voters to increase the village sales and use tax from 1.0% to 1.5%. The board says the additional 0.5% would be dedicated to renovating the existing fire station into a community center and to pay one-third of construction costs for a new Fire & Rescue Station, with the tax set to expire 25 years after initial collection.
Village Clerk Nick Nystrom read the resolution during the meeting and the board voted 4-0 to adopt it. The resolution cites Nebraska Revised Statute 77-27,142.01 and instructs the clerk to certify the proposition to the Cass County Election Commissioner by March 1, 2026 so it can be placed on the May 12 primary ballot as provided by law.
At the same meeting the board approved several procurement items tied to the Fire & Rescue Facility project. Motions passed 4-0 to accept Nebraska Digging's proposal for dirt work and grading in an amount not to exceed $65,000; to approve Benesch for construction testing and inspection services for $17,721; to approve E & A Consulting Group for construction surveying for $14,200; and to authorize painting of structural beams in an amount not to exceed $9,000. Each of those motions was recorded as passing unanimously.
The board recorded the procedural votes that introduced and then adopted the tax-resolution; if a majority of village voters approve the question in May, the resolution empowers the village to implement the tax increase under the Local Option Revenue Act. If the proposition fails, the board will not increase the sales and use tax. The resolution specifies the additional receipts would be used only for the community center renovation and the village's portion (one-third) of the new Fire & Rescue Station construction costs.
Next steps: the clerk is directed to certify the resolution to the Cass County Election Commissioner by March 1, 2026 and the county will prepare ballots and issue early voter ballots in accordance with state law. The question will appear on the May 12, 2026 Statewide Primary Election ballot, where voters of the Village of Eagle will decide whether to approve the change.
