Commission backs $31,220 Columbus Avenue public-art facilitation contract for City Commission approval

The Public Arts and Culture Commission on June 16 approved staff’s recommendation to authorize a $31,220 fee for the MKSK and Little Industries team to lead facilitation for the Columbus Avenue public art project and will forward the recommendation to the City Commission so the City Manager can sign the contract.
Staff told commissioners the selection team reviewed seven proposals and that the MKSK/Little Industries team scored substantially higher than competitors. Staff said the scope includes two public workshops, two presentations to the Public Arts and Culture Commission, a marketing and selection process, and draft deliverables to commission the public artwork.
Staff noted Colleen Mavis of MKSK would serve as project manager and that the fee was negotiated downward after removing an external website build the team had proposed; the city will build the website in-house. The fee of $31,220 was described as within the expected range for a consultant facilitating a project of this size.
Commissioner Adam Ramsdell moved to follow staff’s recommendation; the motion passed on a roll-call vote with Marsha Carrington, Alex Dominick, Greg Mello, Adam Ramsdell and Martha Weikel voting yes. The commission will place the item on the next available City Commission agenda (staff anticipated July 13) to authorize the City Manager to execute the contract.
Staff said the contract may include an optional, if-authorized task to remain on through the artist selection phase; if that task is later authorized, it will return to the commission for approval of any additional fee.
