Planning Commission backs rezoning of three E. Main parcels to I-2; one commissioner urges Public Facilities designation for 515
Summary
The Commission voted to forward resolutions recommending rezoning of 515, 549 and 553 E. Main Ave to I-2 General Industrial to City Council; Commissioner Rebecca Perkins voted against rezoning 515 because she wants guaranteed greenspace or a Public Facilities designation for part of that parcel.

The Zeeland Planning Commission on Oct. 2 voted to forward resolutions to City Council recommending rezoning of three parcels on E. Main Ave to I-2 General Industrial.
Zoning Administrator Timothy Maday presented resolutions prepared after the Commission’s earlier direction. For 515 E. Main Ave — previously PF (Public Facilities) zoned — Commissioner Rebecca Perkins said she supported expansion but wanted a portion of the parcel reserved or rezoned as Public Facilities to guarantee greenspace; she voted no on the resolution for 515, citing those concerns. The motion to recommend rezoning 515 to I-2 (Motion 2025.25) passed with six ayes and one nay. Resolutions recommending that 549 and 553 E. Main Ave be rezoned to I-2 were approved unanimously and will be forwarded to City Council for consideration at its Oct. 20 meeting.
Maday said staff finds the proposed rezonings appropriate based on consultant analysis and City planning criteria. The Commission’s recommendations will be transmitted to City Council for final action.
Next steps: the resolutions will be presented to City Council on Oct. 20, 2025; staff and commissioners asked members of the public to monitor the Council docket if they wish to comment further.
